Hi
I have been working on a concept of recognizing equivalencies for DND trained
Marine Engineers for consideration to be hired as Vessel Maintenance Managers in
the Canadian Coast Guard.
Normally, our requirements are for a minimum of Third Class Certificates of
Competency as Marine Engineer (steam, motor, or combined) or Second Class
Certificates depending on the level of the position being considered. However,
for these shore project management positions, there is no regulatory requirement
for the certification, and it is really just a measure of competency and
experience working in the marine engineering field.
Once I've got this all figured out (I understand the commercial certification,
but need to cross reference it to the DND cert's), do you think it would be
worthwhile to advertise any job availability on this site? We've got several
openings right now in Sarnia Ontario for personnel with minimum of 2nd class
certs', and if I can get equivalencies down then I'm trying to find ways to
advertise within the navy community.
Any comments or ideas would be appreciated.

When I was getting ready to retire, I decided maybe I'd like to do a job
that didn't keep me away from the house all day, and I didn't have to travel
far to get to work. I've got my full pension, so I really didn't need a job
for the money, besides, my house is paid off and it's just my wife and I
home now. I just wanted to get out in the community, meet people, and have a
little fun. I decided to drive school bus.
Some people asked if I'd be able to handle the kids, my response is they
can't be any worse than some junior officers. Well, the truth is, they are
not all that easy to put up with at times, and the most of them are not all
that bad either.
When a little five year old child comes up to you, gives you a little hug
with a smile, and thanks you, it sure feels good.
If you are up to the challenge, check out your local school bus company,
they might want you. I'm driving for Stock Transportation and my pay is only
$9.89 per hour, and I only drive for about 5 hours a day, but I'm having
fun. Hey, I even get to dip the oil in the diesel engine, and do a RAS every
two days at the local Irving station.
Oh yea, you don't have to be crazy to like this type of a job, but it sure
does help!
One more thing, if you go to Stock, tell them I sent you, I can get a bonus
out of them. The phone number is 481-8400.

Just a quick note saying that there is no problem transferring a NS 4th Class Stationary to a Nfld. 4th Class Power Engineer other than $40.00. I just did it and am working as an engineer in a fish plant here on the Rock. If anyone needs the contact info, let me know, and I will email it. There is no problem getting a job here as a 4th Class. In the last 2 weeks, I have seen 4 job openings for 4th and 3rd Class.
